Smith School of Business, reported that 69% of small businesses said that they were profitable in 2008. And 70% said they expect their firms to still be operating in five years as opposed to being closed, sold or transferred.

What this tells me is that small businesses are resilient. They have the ability to make the adjustments to their business quickly in order to survive during tough times. They also understand the power of the Internet and use it to grow their businesses.

A key discovery from the survey highlighted the number of internet business solutions used by a small business as an indictor of success. Those businesses that use 6 or more internet related tools and tactics such as a company website, company email, and search engine optimization, among others, were more competitive and the business owner believed more profitable.

I’m inviting you to take the Small Business Success Index© survey online to find out how your business scores among the 1,000 small businesses we surveyed across the country.

The Small Business Success Index measures how successful small businesses believe they are in six key areas of business that include: credit access, marketing and innovation, workforce, customer service, computer technology and compliance. By tracking these six areas where small businesses feel they are succeeding and failing, the Index will highlight what successful businesses are doing differently so that others can use them as benchmarks for their business.

To find out more about the Small Business Success Index visit www.growsmartbusiness.com.
