Pizza companies are the latest to benefit by letting consumers order online.

According to Pizza Marketing Quarterly (PMQ), the average online pizza order is $6 to $9 higher than the average telephone order.

PMQ said online customers had a more leisurely experience than did phone customers, and that having access to the entire menu let them order without feeling rushed, resulting in the higher totals.

The findings have pizza marketers fine-tuning their e-mail strategies.

Bill McCloskey, CEO of E-Mail Data Source, wrote in a recent E-Mail Insider article that the most common call to action among pizza marketers was an "Order Online" button in their e-mails.

Mr. McCloskey said that some companies let customers set up preset orders, which promoted impulse purchases.

It's true that online ordering systems have benefitted everyone involved where pizza is concerned. I do feel like many pizza sites need to do some streamlining to improve the ease of use for these features. I've heard from less technical users who have spent 30 to 45 minutes trying to create an account (which is a silly requirement) and make the order. 45 minutes! Not only is that enough time to have it delivered by calling them over the phone, it's enough time to make your own pizza.
