Bio:
When asked to write a little about myself, I always like to lead off saying that all I do is for my family and, in fact, I particularly enjoy spending time with family. That's especially good given I have a wonderful wife and six terrific kids. Kristen is the oldest, followed by Eric, Austin, Madi-Kate, Sara Beth, and Landon. My wife Kim and I are really blessed. We like taking family picnics, going hiking, having "family movie nights", tossing ball in the backyard, watching the kids' various activities, and participating in church events.
To keep all those mouths fed, I am highly driven to work hard and, thus, I have a very demanding work life. I feel blessed to work in an industry that is enjoyable, challenging, and rewarding. I am the President and Technical Director at NorthStar Solutions, LLC, a popular software business and successful e-commerce company that provides e-commerce outsourcing solutions to other businesses. Being a small business, I wear many hats to keep the business running profitably and smoothly. We currently list thousands of titles, particularly software products, though we accept other types of products that fit in with the moral integrity of the business. NorthStar Solutions has existed since 1994.
My work career started while I was serving in the U.S. Air Force. There I was introduced to the PC and a variety of software that was relatively new at the time, and I quickly found my vocational love. Having saved some money for college, I was honorably discharged from Air Force and attended Kansas State University, where I majored in Business Management. Like many entrepreneurs, I started a small business while in college. Well, at the time, it was more just a concept: I wrote a software program to help people format diskettes. I was proud of it, so I polished it up and gave it away as shareware (and then asked for donations if people found it useful). To be honest, the program was a complete failure (I think I sold one copy total), but it did inspire me to start my e-commerce business and write several other (much better) programs. Fortunately, both of those subsequent ventures were substantially more successful. The lesson I learned was not to be afraid of failure and to keep trying and build on ideas.
I'm always asked what kind of software programs I write. It's a difficult question to answer because I have a wide variety of software titles: about a dozen total. Some of the more popular are the Snappy Invoice System, whose main feature is that it is very easy to use and yet it produces clean, professional-looking invoices. Other programs include Macro Mania, which is an automation utility to help people write macros and save time using their computer; and Poker Challenge, which is a game that combines the rules of poker with a solitaire-style play. One of the oldest titles, Manage Your Contacts, also continues to be a best-seller because it enables people to very easily store contact names, and search and sort their entries in a variety of ways.
